What kind of guitar should I get?
These recommendations are for average sized children. If your child is much smaller than most, consider the younger age recommendation, If your child is much larger than most then consider the next older age recommendation.
Ages 5-6
1/2 size nylon string acoustic guitar or a ukulele (you can tune it like the first four strings of the guitar if you want them to learn guitar chords)
Ages 7-10
3/4 size nylon string acoustic or 3/4 steel string acoustic guitar. The nylon string guitars are often easier on little finger tips.
Ages 11 and up
Full size acoustic guitar. A steel string acoustic guitar will be the most versatile guitar for learning a variety of styles such as rock, pop, folk singer songwriter, finger styles etc.. A nylon string guitar is great for learning classical and spanish guitar, while electric guitars are specific to styles like rock and jazz. Make a purchase according to your child's interest. If you are unsure, my recommendation is an acoustic steel string. Our guitar classes are based around music chosen for this instrument.
Other things to note...
If your child is really committed and you want to purchase a quality instrument ($300-???), which can get pricey, I recommend making a purchase for the long term. For example if your child is in need of a new guitar at 6 years old, and has been serious and dedicated in their lessons, I would recommend purchasing the 3/4 size instrument and allowing them to grow into it. Even a smaller adult will feel comfortable with a 3/4 size. If your child is 9 or 10 and average size it might be better to invest in a full size guitar (there are ones with a smaller body called parlor size that can work great for children) and let them grow into it! A quality instrument can last years and years if cared for and protected!
If you are just trying it out to see if guitar is the right instrument for your child, then purchase a less expensive ($75-$150 for full size) or better yet, borrow a guitar from friends or family. We can work with the larger sized guitars even for smaller children for a semester if need be.
